Eastern Medical Philosophy
Acupuncture, along with herbal formulas and moxibustion make up Chinese Traditional Medicine that is over 3,000 years old. It is based on a theory that Qi (pronounced "chee"), the life force, which flows along the vessels in our body (not dissimilar to blood circulation) and is responsible for all the functions of the body - breathing, thinking heartbeat, metabolism and emotions. It is the universal force of creation and destruction. When the flow of Qi is smooth, the body is in a state of wellness and balance. If the flow is obstructed by either internal or external causes, or the Qi is weak due to poor diet or stress, the body becomes unable to contain its necessary balance. If left untreated, this can lead to disease. Using acupuncture, herbal prescriptions and moxibustion will help to restore the normal flow of Qi, and therefore restore harmony within the body.
Tiny needles are inserted at various points along the vessels depending on the health problem. The needles may then be twirled or moved in a back-and-forth motion. Sometimes electrical stimulation is used.
This is a process in which pressed herbal cones are applied to acupuncture points or needles to create heat, which helps to restore the smooth flow of Qi.
Cups are made of glass and come in a variety of sizes to fit specific body surfaces. By putting heat near the opening, suctioned out air creates a vacuum which then pulls the skin into the glass. A single cup or multiple cups are used on acupuncture points to break up local congestion and relieve pain.
These combinations of different herbs work together synergistically to achieve a single goal of treating a certain disharmony. They can be taken as a decoction (boiling the herbs together), in powder form, or in pill form.
